Waterjet cutting is a fabrication method that is employed to process metal plate. It is particularly useful when fabricating nonconductive metals, such as manganese, lead, and tungsten, which cannot be processed with a plasma burner (plasma cutting requires an electrical connection between the material and the torch). However, it can certainly process conductive materials as well. Waterjet cutting machines can be used to fabricate steel, aluminum, titanium, brass, and exotic metals.
Benefits of Waterjet Cutting
Waterjet cutters are extremely accurate and can produce intricate cuts required by detailed blueprints. They also have a narrow kerf, which allows parts to be more closely nested together, reducing waste. Perhaps the best benefit of waterjet cutters, compared to plasma and laser cutters, is that they do not require heat to process the material. This means no heat-affected zone (HAZ) is left behind, and the metal sheet will not warp or change properties, maintaining the quality of the material. Furthermore, multiple waterjet cutting heads can oftentimes be installed on one machine, allowing multiple fabrications to be performed at once and speeding up production.
